 Application Process
« Thread Started on Nov 10, 2006, 2:28am »

We are giving preference to applications for CANON characters right now, though Original Characters may apply as students of the Institute after talking to an admin.

Please reference the Current Taken/Reserved List before applying for a canon character.

Applications for Original Characters will go faster if you first discuss it with at least the administrators (Your Admin Team). We also ask that you look over the Powers List for OCs: this includes not only ideas for powers, but a list of abilities that we will not allow for OCs at this time. Also see the response to this post for a few high-level items around applying for an OC.

Use the application template for Canon Characters or Original Characters, following all the instructions therein. When you have completed it, post the application as a new thread in the Character Applications, with the character name as the topic title.

Every pending application requires majority Admin approval before it is officially accepted. At this board, this is done behind closed doors and may take up to four days though we try and get you an answer faster real life permitting. Once accepted, the application will be moved to the Accepted/Active Characters list and locked and you may begin posting.

If you are asked to modify your application, then please do so in accordance with the board preference of reality. See Reality - A New Beginning for details.

There is a 2 character maximum for right now. This could change in the future but for right now, you're only allowed to have two at one time. Third characters will be considered on a case by case basis and only for those players who have proven they can keep up with the demands of posting for two characters or if one of the three characters will be a rarely used one.

Please keep in mind that our board is set roughly before Astonishing X-men started (around 2004) so try to keep everything about your character around that time.

 Addendum: Application Process for OCs

When applying for an Original Character (OC), the usual application process should be followed. As stated above, please talk to an admin before applying for an OC. In an effort to be clear, there are a few items to point out specific to OCs:

1. Be sure to use the Original Character Application Template, following the instructions and guidelines outlined there.

2. OCs may ONLY apply for a student position, either already aware they are mutants or about to discover they are.

3. No bastard children or clones of canon characters. We don't need seventeen of Wolverine's (or anyone's) progeny filling a classroom. (This rule only applies to OCs: If you want to play a canon character who is a child or a clone, then you’re following the canon application process.)

4. No Mary Sues/Gary Stus!

5. At this time, no OC villains are being accepted.

6. Powers. Since the application can take time to complete, we highly recommend that people applying for OCs speak to an admin before starting the process in order to help it go smoothly. But before you do that, check out the Powers List for OCs. In an effort to keep the board balanced and avoid duplication, we’ve compiled this list of powers with notations on any restrictions. We’ve also banned some for board balance. Please review the list before you commit yourself to a set of powers for your character and (as always) contact an admin if you have any questions. Please note the restriction - OCs should only have ONE power, which may be developed into a set of related abilities if desired.
In addition, OC powers may be limited by Admins at the time of character inception, but can be left open for the OC to grow into. Keep in mind that an OC on this board is a student, and thus won't have full mastery of his/her powers. Likewise, (s)he may have powers or capabilities that haven't manifested yet. We will look most favorably on applications that reflect this mindset from the start.

As with anything else in the application process, contact an Admin if you have a question. But be sure to check out the FAQ before you do so: your question may already be there!
