Below are the questions most frequently asked of the administrators here at New Dawn. We have started this collection for reference and to keep from going insane. Anyone who asks an Admin any of the below questions will have this thread pointed out to them. After that, asking one of these questions will get you thrown to Maverick for target practice.

We also assume that you’ve read the Rules and Instructions on How to Join and have familiarized yourself with the Application Process.

Onto the FAQ!

Q: Which canon characters are available?
A: See the Current Taken Reserved List.

Q: Do I have to write a new application for an adoptable character?
A: Yes. We want to see how you will handle the character, your take on their personality, history, etc., and we especially need to see your sample writing.

Q: I want to apply for an adoptable character, but the character name has already been registered as an account. What should I do?
A: If you can wait, contact an admin, and we'll give you access to the old account. If you registered under a different account name, don't sweat it: You can change your display name in your profile.

Q: Can I apply for an original character (OC)?
A: Yes. Please see the application process for details. OCs must be students of the Institute. That means they cannot be villains at this time. Also, applications for canon characters will be given preference over those for OCs. Finally, make sure you review the Powers List (for OCs) thread for permissible & banned powers.

Q: Can I create an OC villain?
A: No. We are not accepting original character applications for villains at this time. Period.

Q: Do I need to have a canon character before applying for an OC?
A: No. However, applications for canon characters will be given preference over applications for original characters. Likewise, applications for dropped or “most wanted” characters will be given preference over other canon characters.

Q: Can I have ____ power? It isn't on the OC power list.
A: If it's on the banned list, no. If it's not on the list at all, double check the list to ensure it’s not there. (We may be calling it by a slightly different name.) If you’re absolutely certain it’s not there, talk to an admin about your idea.

Q: Is magic allowed? Are demons? Are alien based characters?
A: No. No. No. These are not in keeping with the board’s setting.

Q: Can I modify a canon character's powers?
A: If you're eliminating some powers to make the character fit better into the New Dawn setting, yes. Otherwise, no.

Q: Can I use pictures of real people or actors (ie. Heath Ledger/Viggo Mortensen/Sarah Michelle Geller/Natalie Portman) in my icon/signature?
A: No. We are a COMIC based board. Pictures of any real people are not acceptable avatars and definitely not in keeping with the board’s setting. They will be removed if used. You are free to use any comic (Marvel/DC/an independent) picture for your character.

Q: When can I apply for a second character?
A: Applications for a second character will be considered once the player has posted regularly with his/her existing character and proven that (s)he can handle a second one. This means quality posts on a regular basis. What’s “quality” and what’s a “regular basis”? We reserve the right to judge that subjectively.

Q: When can I apply for a third character?
A: As stated in the application process, there is currently a two-character maximum. Applications for a third character will be considered on a case by case basis and only for those players who have proven they can keep up with the demands of posting for two characters or if one of the three characters will be a rarely used one.

Q: I play a canon character/original character on another site. Can I use my profile/application from that site to apply here?
A: In short, no. We ask that all players follow our Application Process. There may be pieces you can cut-and-paste from another site's application, but you must use our process to apply. We are looking for creative players, and taking the time to actually work on an application for our site demonstrates not only your skill but also your willingness to make an effort to be part of the story here at New Dawn.

On a side note, We highly encourage people to take on characters they haven't played before. We all have our favorite canons and may be attached to ones we've created over the years. But discovering and getting to know a new character can be the best part of the creative process.

Q: How long will it take to get my application approved?
A: It varies. We aim to turn it around in a couple of days, but four admins need to review it and provide feedback. If there are no revisions to be made, this usually takes less than 3 days. Applications requiring edits – especially OC applications – can take a week or more, depending on the number of revisions. Please be patient. We want to give your app the attention it deserves.

Q: How do I find out what's been going on in the story?
A: Check out the Media Room area of the board.

Q: What's the setting?
A: This is a comic-verse board, set somewhere between the 'Planet X' and 'Here Comes Tomorrow' story arcs. Jean Grey was presumably killed by Magneto, and Scott and Emma have taken over as Headmaster and Headmistress of the school. House of M has not happened yet, and should not be referenced in the RP or applications. Additionally, we focus on the human challenges of being a mutant, so please leave out aliens, magic, and demons, etc. There’s enough to focus on without them. We will not accept X-Men from non comic sources (i.e. movieverse, or X-Men: Evolution), and we will not accept characters from alternate timelines that have not made their way into standard continuity.

Q: What if the admins say no to my idea or want me to revise my application?
A: Please take a deep breath, understand that we have our reasons, and make the requested change. We most ask for adjustments to an application to help balance a character or assist with their fitting in with the board setting. We always give a reason for any rejections or requests for changes. Please read our feedback, reread it, and try not to take it personally. If you want, you can make a counter-argument, but generally that is an unsuccessful approach.
Note: We highly recommend that anyone applying for an OC run it by the admins first before writing an application. The process takes time, and we don’t want anyone to get frustrated.

Q: Who are the admins? How do I contact them?
A: See the Your Admin Team thread or send us mail at our Gmail account - NewDawnAdmin@gmail.com. For the fastest answers, we are all generally available over messenger programs. If you don’t have that information, please send a board PM to one of the administrators and we’ll get in touch with you.

Q: What if I think the Admins are jerks?
(This isn't so much common, as a possibility.... =) )
A: You’re free to think that. However, being abusive to any admin (or any player, for that matter) will get you banned. The admins on this board do a lot of work behind the scenes to make this a fun place to write and keep the board a place we’re proud to be a part of. Our members are writing what we think is a wonderful story and having fun while doing it. We will protect that at all costs.
