Chapter 5 - Death Takes a Holiday « Thread Started on Jun 29, 2009, 9:16pm »
After their school outing to the city's museums went horribly wrong and led to the deaths of two young people - one mutant and one human - the events of the past several weeks have almost seemed anti-climatic to the band of survivors holed up at Xavier's.
Amanda Mathilidis' funeral was a private affair, attended only by staff and students of the school that some have claimed took her life by drawing attention to mutants. Brian Diaz's funeral was a full blown affair that whipped the media into a frenzy, capped by a sudden news conference with a dubious jewel - the possibility of the Sentinel program being scrapped.
Between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, the scandal in the outside world has been brewing and taking on a life of its own. Special sessions of Congress have been called and the Mutant Task Force and the Friends of Humanity put under hard scrutiny thanks to a video purportedly taken from inside the manned suit that shows the humans not only fired first, but that they targeted one of their own to frame the mutant protesters.
Meanwhile, those wounded worst by the pendulum of accusations have been left to complete their schooling for the year in peace. Some of the students have taken tentative steps into the strangely serene outside world to go home for the holidays, testing the tenuous peace. For others, the Xavier Institute is all the home they have left and so they keep the season in their own way, and keep it very nicely as the shadows that have been cast over them are forced away... for a little while.
